Meet the
coaches.

Aaron Nations

A Sarasota native, Aaron has seen local lacrosse grow from its grassroots as both a player and a coach. He played on Riverview High School’s inaugural lacrosse team and went on to reach the Sweet 16 of the state playoffs. After attending Florida Gulf Coast University for a short time, he returned to Sarasota to coach at Riverview.

Aaron spent three years as a varsity assistant and one year as JV head coach at Riverview, guiding the JV team to an undefeated 10–0 season. He then spent two years as the boys varsity head coach at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School. He is now the head coach of Sarasota High School boys lacrosse and the founder of Calusa Lacrosse Club.

Over six years of club coaching, Aaron has worked with regional, state, and national teams. He has also helped student-athletes navigate the recruiting process for NCAA Division I, II, and III programs.

Kyle Such

Kyle graduated from Rivier University in 2025, where he played men’s lacrosse and won the GNAC championship. He continued his academic and athletic career as a graduate student at Post University in 2026, appearing in and starting all 17 games. A two-time All-State defender, Kyle earned recognition at short-stick defensive midfield and defense.

Kyle served as defensive coordinator at East Catholic High School in Connecticut and coached the Connecticut Valley Lacrosse Club’s 2033 team during the summers. He now serves as defensive coordinator at Sarasota High School, working with the Sailors’ defense.

Christian Dombovari

Christian is the head coach of boys lacrosse at Riverview High School in Sarasota. He has coached regional travel teams with the Sarasota Seahawks, Lakewood Ranch Monsters, and True Lacrosse. His coaching background also includes Casey Powell Lacrosse/The Farm.

Matthew T. Joiner

Matt grew up in Sarasota, attending Gocio Elementary, Booker Middle, and Sarasota High before earning a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of South Florida. Baseball was his first passion. He played for the Sarasota High Sailors, helping the team win state and national championships in his senior year, 1989, and continued playing on a scholarship at Manatee Community College.

He began his teaching career at Booker Middle School, spending 10 years teaching physical education and coaching basketball and tennis. For the past 18 years, he has taught at Sarasota Middle School, where he also serves as athletic director. He has coached track and field, soccer, flag football, and tennis, and introduced students to lacrosse through intramural activities.

Coaching his two sons’ teams gave Matt some of his most meaningful experiences in sports. When they discovered lacrosse, he learned the game alongside them and developed a passion of his own. He now serves as an assistant lacrosse coach at Sarasota High and joins Calusa to help young athletes build skills, confidence, and a lasting love for the game.

Gavin Dempsey

Gavin grew up on Long Island competing in both lacrosse and high-level travel hockey, eventually reaching the junior level in hockey. At Ward Melville High School, he played midfield, attack, and faceoff specialist, helping the team win state and national championships in 2018.

He now coaches offense at Sarasota High School and coaches and volunteers with a local youth lacrosse program. Gavin brings a winning mentality to his players while keeping the game fun and helping them develop a lasting love for lacrosse.

David Bascom

David is in his second year as an assistant coach for Sarasota High School boys lacrosse. He brings more than five years of experience assisting with the Manatee Wildcats boys lacrosse program, along with a background coaching wrestling at both the youth and high school levels.

A former firefighter, David has more than 20 years of strength and conditioning experience through his own training and his work helping others. His experience includes preparing firefighters for the physical demands of the job, bringing a practical understanding of strength, fitness, and physical preparation to his coaching.
